Irene G. Chaffee was born in Falls Village, CT on November 13, 1912 and passed away in Binghamton, NY on October 7, 2014. . She is survived by a son, Scott J. Longrod and wife Patricia of Lansing, NY, granddaughter Darlene, great granddaughter Jenny, and two great great granddaughters and a great grandson Matthew all of New Mexico. Also, daughter, Loretta L. Weber and husband Herman of Pasadena, TX and a granddaughter, Anne M. O’Donnell-Davis and husband Gerard of Newton, NH. She graduated from Candor High School in 1929 and went on to teach at the former Crines Corners School in Candor. Finding teaching not to her liking she attended Hartwick College in Oneonta 1933-34 where she finished 1 year of a 4 year dietitian course. During WWII and the Korean Conflict, Irene volunteered for the Ground Observer Corps which was sponsored by the Air Force. The observers reported sightings, sounds and directions of planes to Hancock Field in Syracuse. She worked for the Candor Courier, the Endicott Sun-Bulletin and The Binghamton Press as a typesetter and proofreader, retiring from the Press in 1977. Irene enjoyed hiking, bird watching and photography. Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Maple Grove Cemetery, Candor.
