David E. Canavan, 69, of Apalachin passed away unexpectedly, Saturday, February 6, 2016, at home. David was predeceased by parents, Walter and Florence Canavan; five sisters, Glenna Warner, Marlene Baker, Treva Way, Nila Marlin, Tammy Cornett. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 46 years, Roxie Canavan; daughter and son-in-law, Heidi and Don Eckerson, son, David W. Canavan; two sisters and brother-in-law, Jean and Vincent Nagel, Linda; brother, Daniel Canavan and Theresa Burgess, several nieces and nephews. Dave and Roxie were high school sweethearts at Owego Free Academy and were engaged while he was serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Dave worked at the Union Forging works for almost 25 years and in his retirement he had to keep busy so he enjoyed working at Southern Tier Hardwoods. His retirement years were filled with many projects. Dave will be remembered as an unassuming renaissance guy who could do just about anything, everything from building houses to toy chests for the children in his life, his enjoyment of cooking homemade meals for his family and friends, his love of hunting, fishing, gardening, astronomy and beekeeping, to name a few. A celebration of Dave’s life will be held on Friday, February 12, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Estey, Munroe & Fahey Funeral Home, 15 Park St., Owego, NY. The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Scipio Center Rural Cemetery.
