Obituary of Barbara E. Updyke

Barbara Updyke, age 85, of Candor, died peacefully in her home on February 6, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. Barbara was born on June 2, 1931 in Greenwood, N.Y., the daughter of the late Arthur and Jennie (Carson) Teribury. Barbara retired from BorgWarner following 22 years of faithful service. She loved to read and spend time with her family, whom she considered life's greatest gift. Nothing gave her greater pleasure than the time spent with her grandchildren. She had a sharp mind and quick wit that brought smiles and laughter to those around her. She was always ready to lend a hand where she could and she was affectionately known as mom and gram to many young people in the Candor community throughout the years. Having to leave high school at age 16 to seek employment to help support her family, she regretted that she never graduated from high school. After hours of preparation, she successfully passed of the exams and was able to make dream reality as she proudly took the stage at 76 years young and became a member of the graduating class of 2007 through TST BOCES. Barbara is survived by her children, Terry Coates, Tracy Updyke (Donna) and Jennifer (Le) Luu; step sons Frank (Laura) Updyke and William (Maxine) Updyke; nine grandchildren, Carrie, Carmen, Nicholas, Tylia, Tera, Zachary, Jacob, Elizabeth and Serenity; 10 great grandchildren, Wyatt, Paedyn, Nash, Mattie, Jeremy, Brady, Kaleb, Weston, Phoenix, and Leilanie. She is also survived by her sister-in-law and best friend, Linda Teribury and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Robert in 1993. Also predeceasing her were siblings, Beverly (Bette) Batrouny, Beatrice (Beattie) Geffers, Elizabeth (Tillie) Foster, Arthur Teribury, Frederick Teribury, Leola (Tiny) Hoyt, and Jessie Baldwin. In keeping with Barbara's wishes, there will be no services.
