My family and I moved to Owego in the summer of 2012. I was lonely with a husband who worked a lot and three young sons to raise in a new home a thousand miles away from our families. The kids and I spent many days walking the village of Owego. In our daily errands and adventures we came to know the Angel on earth known as Mr.Tom Ash, as my sons called him. He welcomed us into insurance agency and we felt, into his life. He seemed to stop by for a porch chat just when I was missing my dad the most. He accompanied my sons to StPatrick school for the special breakfast with “grands” he stood in as their surrogate grandpa!! He taught the boys how to fold the best airplanes, introduced them to Jennifer’s office pup, “Scoot-ah”, and just made such an impression on the kids and I. He gave us all a sense of belonging when we were all out of sorts. It was a difficult time for me and our family, but Mr. Tom Ash left a warm spot in our hearts when we think of the time we spent in Owego.
When we moved back to Illinois, HE was the thing we missed most. It’s a great place to live, but was made to feel like home because of him. He told me many stories about his life and family. He was an amazing person. This is my tribute to such a special man who I have never let go of in my mind. We visited a few years ago and I tried to locate him, but failed. I will always remember him with the love of a family member.
To his family…may God bless you as you mourn your loss. MrTom Ash truly was so special. Thank you for sharing your Angel on earth with me, my sons, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
